Gregory Smith left Norway 15 years ago to help the street children of Brazil. He founded the Children at Risk Foundation and the Hummingbird Project in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which has grown to 600 street children and children at risk. One thousand youth are now on the waiting list.

Nobel Lecture
Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Honorable Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Grameen Bank and I are deeply honoured to receive this most prestigious of awards. We are thrilled and overwhelmed by this honour. Since the Nobel Peace Prize was announced, I have received endless messages from around the world, but what moves me most are the calls I get almost daily, from the borrowers of Grameen Bank in remote Bangladeshi villages, who just want to say how proud they are to have received this recognition.

Nine elected representatives of the 7 million borrowers-cum-owners of Grameen Bank have accompanied me all the way to Oslo to receive the prize. I express thanks on their behalf to the Norwegian Nobel Committee for choosing Grameen Bank for this year's Nobel Peace Prize. By giving their institution the most prestigious prize in the world, you give them unparalleled honour. Thanks to your prize, nine proud women from the villages of Bangladesh are at the ceremony today as Nobel laureates, giving an altogether new meaning to the Nobel Peace Prize.

All borrowers of Grameen Bank are celebrating this day as the greatest day of their lives. They are gathering around the nearest television set in their villages all over Bangladesh , along with other villagers, to watch the proceedings of this ceremony.

This years' prize gives highest honour and dignity to the hundreds of millions of women all around the world who struggle every day to make a living and bring hope for a better life for their children. This is a historic moment for them.

Poverty is a Threat to Peace

Ladies and Gentlemen:

By giving us this prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has given important support to the proposition that peace is inextricably linked to poverty. Poverty is a threat to peace.

World's income distribution gives a very telling story. Ninety four percent of the world income goes to 40 percent of the population while sixty percent of people live on only 6 per cent of world income. Half of the world population lives on two dollars a day. Over one billion people live on less than a dollar a day. This is no formula for peace.

The new millennium began with a great global dream. World leaders gathered at the United Nations in 2000 and adopted, among others, a historic goal to reduce poverty by half by 2015. Never in human history had such a bold goal been adopted by the entire world in one voice, one that specified time and size. But then came September 11 and the Iraq war, and suddenly the world became derailed from the pursuit of this dream, with the attention of world leaders shifting from the war on poverty to the war on terrorism. Till now over $ 530 billion has been spent on the war in Iraq by the USA alone.

I believe terrorism cannot be won over by military action. Terrorism must be condemned in the strongest language. We must stand solidly against it, and find all the means to end it. We must address the root causes of terrorism to end it for all time to come. I believe that putting resources into improving the lives of the poor people is a better strategy than spending it on guns.

Poverty is Denial of All Human Rights

Peace should be understood in a human way - in a broad social, political and economic way. Peace is threatened by unjust economic, social and political order, absence of democracy, environmental degradation and absence of human rights.

Poverty is the absence of all human rights. The frustrations, hostility and anger generated by abject poverty cannot sustain peace in any society. For building stable peace we must find ways to provide opportunities for people to live decent lives.

The creation of opportunities for the majority of people - the poor - is at the heart of the work that we have dedicated ourselves to during the past 30 years.

Grameen Bank

I became involved in the poverty issue not as a policymaker or a researcher. I became involved because poverty was all around me, and I could not turn away from it. In 1974, I found it difficult to teach elegant theories of economics in the university classroom, in the backdrop of a terrible famine in Bangladesh. Suddenly, I felt the emptiness of those theories in the face of crushing hunger and poverty. I wanted to do something immediate to help people around me, even if it was just one human being, to get through another day with a little more ease. That brought me face to face with poor people's struggle to find the tiniest amounts of money to support their efforts to eke out a living. I was shocked to discover a woman in the village, borrowing less than a dollar from the money-lender, on the condition that he would have the exclusive right to buy all she produces at the price he decides. This, to me, was a way of recruiting slave labor.

I decided to make a list of the victims of this money-lending "business" in the village next door to our campus.

When my list was done, it had the names of 42 victims who borrowed a total amount of US $27. I offered US $27 from my own pocket to get these victims out of the clutches of those money-lenders. The excitement that was created among the people by this small action got me further involved in it. If I could make so many people so happy with such a tiny amount of money, why not do more of it?

That is what I have been trying to do ever since. The first thing I did was to try to persuade the bank located in the campus to lend money to the poor. But that did not work. The bank said that the poor were not creditworthy. After all my efforts, over several months, failed I offered to become a guarantor for the loans to the poor. I was stunned by the result. The poor paid back their loans, on time, every time! But still I kept confronting difficulties in expanding the program through the existing banks. That was when I decided to create a separate bank for the poor, and in 1983, I finally succeeded in doing that. I named it Grameen Bank or Village bank.

Today, Grameen Bank gives loans to nearly 7.0 million poor people, 97 per cent of whom are women, in 73,000 villages in Bangladesh. Grameen Bank gives collateral-free income generating, housing, student and micro-enterprise loans to the poor families and offers a host of attractive savings, pension funds and insurance products for its members. Since it introduced them in 1984, housing loans have been used to construct 640,000 houses. The legal ownership of these houses belongs to the women themselves. We focused on women because we found giving loans to women always brought more benefits to the family.

In a cumulative way the bank has given out loans totaling about US $6.0 billion. The repayment rate is 99%. Grameen Bank routinely makes profit. Financially, it is self-reliant and has not taken donor money since 1995. Deposits and own resources of Grameen Bank today amount to 143 per cent of all outstanding loans. According to Grameen Bank's internal survey, 58 per cent of our borrowers have crossed the poverty line.

Grameen Bank was born as a tiny homegrown project run with the help of several of my students, all local girls and boys. Three of these students are still with me in Grameen Bank, after all these years, as its topmost executives. They are here today to receive this honour you give us.

This idea, which began in Jobra, a small village in Bangladesh, has spread around the world and there are now Grameen type programs in almost every country.

Second Generation

It is 30 years now since we began. We keep looking at the children of our borrowers to see what has been the impact of our work on their lives. The women who are our borrowers always gave topmost priority to the children. One of the Sixteen Decisions developed and followed by them was to send children to school. Grameen Bank encouraged them, and before long all the children were going to school. Many of these children made it to the top of their class. We wanted to celebrate that, so we introduced scholarships for talented students. Grameen Bank now gives 30,000 scholarships every year.

Many of the children went on to higher education to become doctors, engineers, college teachers and other professionals. We introduced student loans to make it easy for Grameen students to complete higher education. Now some of them have PhD's. There are 13,000 students on student loans. Over 7,000 students are now added to this number annually.

We are creating a completely new generation that will be well equipped to take their families way out of the reach of poverty. We want to make a break in the historical continuation of poverty.

Beggars Can Turn to Business

In Bangladesh 80 percent of the poor families have already been reached with microcredit. We are hoping that by 2010, 100 per cent of the poor families will be reached.

Three years ago we started an exclusive programme focusing on the beggars. None of Grameen Bank's rules apply to them. Loans are interest-free; they can pay whatever amount they wish, whenever they wish. We gave them the idea to carry small merchandise such as snacks, toys or household items, when they went from house to house for begging. The idea worked. There are now 85,000 beggars in the program. About 5,000 of them have already stopped begging completely. Typical loan to a beggar is $12.

We encourage and support every conceivable intervention to help the poor fight out of poverty. We always advocate microcredit in addition to all other interventions, arguing that microcredit makes those interventions work better.

Information Technology for the Poor

Information and communication technology (ICT) is quickly changing the world, creating distanceless, borderless world of instantaneous communications. Increasingly, it is becoming less and less costly. I saw an opportunity for the poor people to change their lives if this technology could be brought to them to meet their needs.

As a first step to bring ICT to the poor we created a mobile phone company, Grameen Phone. We gave loans from Grameen Bank to the poor women to buy mobile phones to sell phone services in the villages. We saw the synergy between microcredit and ICT.

The phone business was a success and became a coveted enterprise for Grameen borrowers. Telephone-ladies quickly learned and innovated the ropes of the telephone business, and it has become the quickest way to get out of poverty and to earn social respectability. Today there are nearly 300,000 telephone ladies providing telephone service in all the villages of Bangladesh . Grameen Phone has more than 10 million subscribers, and is the largest mobile phone company in the country. Although the number of telephone-ladies is only a small fraction of the total number of subscribers, they generate 19 per cent of the revenue of the company. Out of the nine board members who are attending this grand ceremony today 4 are telephone-ladies.

Grameen Phone is a joint-venture company owned by Telenor of Norway and Grameen Telecom of Bangladesh. Telenor owns 62 per cent share of the company, Grameen Telecom owns 38 per cent. Our vision was to ultimately convert this company into a social business by giving majority ownership to the poor women of Grameen Bank. We are working towards that goal. Someday Grameen Phone will become another example of a big enterprise owned by the poor.

Free Market Economy

Capitalism centers on the free market. It is claimed that the freer the market, the better is the result of capitalism in solving the questions of what, how, and for whom. It is also claimed that the individual search for personal gains brings collective optimal result.

I am in favor of strengthening the freedom of the market. At the same time, I am very unhappy about the conceptual restrictions imposed on the players in the market. This originates from the assumption that entrepreneurs are one-dimensional human beings, who are dedicated to one mission in their business lives - to maximize profit. This interpretation of capitalism insulates the entrepreneurs from all political, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental dimensions of their lives. This was done perhaps as a reasonable simplification, but it stripped away the very essentials of human life.

Human beings are a wonderful creation embodied with limitless human qualities and capabilities. Our theoretical constructs should make room for the blossoming of those qualities, not assume them away.

Many of the world's problems exist because of this restriction on the players of free-market. The world has not resolved the problem of crushing poverty that half of its population suffers. Healthcare remains out of the reach of the majority of the world population. The country with the richest and freest market fails to provide healthcare for one-fifth of its population.

We have remained so impressed by the success of the free-market that we never dared to express any doubt about our basic assumption. To make it worse, we worked extra hard to transform ourselves, as closely as possible, into the one-dimensional human beings as conceptualized in the theory, to allow smooth functioning of free market mechanism.

By defining "entrepreneur" in a broader way we can change the character of capitalism radically, and solve many of the unresolved social and economic problems within the scope of the free market. Let us suppose an entrepreneur, instead of having a single source of motivation (such as, maximizing profit), now has two sources of motivation, which are mutually exclusive, but equally compelling - a) maximization of profit and b) doing good to people and the world.

Each type of motivation will lead to a separate kind of business. Let us call the first type of business a profit-maximizing business, and the second type of business as social business.

Social business will be a new kind of business introduced in the market place with the objective of making a difference in the world. Investors in the social business could get back their investment, but will not take any dividend from the company. Profit would be ploughed back into the company to expand its outreach and improve the quality of its product or service. A social business will be a non-loss, non-dividend company.

Once social business is recognized in law, many existing companies will come forward to create social businesses in addition to their foundation activities. Many activists from the non-profit sector will also find this an attractive option. Unlike the non-profit sector where one needs to collect donations to keep activities going, a social business will be self-sustaining and create surplus for expansion since it is a non-loss enterprise. Social business will go into a new type of capital market of its own, to raise capital.

Young people all around the world, particularly in rich countries, will find the concept of social business very appealing since it will give them a challenge to make a difference by using their creative talent. Many young people today feel frustrated because they cannot see any worthy challenge, which excites them, within the present capitalist world. Socialism gave them a dream to fight for. Young people dream about creating a perfect world of their own.

Almost all social and economic problems of the world will be addressed through social businesses. The challenge is to innovate business models and apply them to produce desired social results cost-effectively and efficiently. Healthcare for the poor, financial services for the poor, information technology for the poor, education and training for the poor, marketing for the poor, renewable energy - these are all exciting areas for social businesses.

Social business is important because it addresses very vital concerns of mankind. It can change the lives of the bottom 60 per cent of world population and help them to get out of poverty.

Grameen's Social Business

Even profit maximizing companies can be designed as social businesses by giving full or majority ownership to the poor. This constitutes a second type of social business. Grameen Bank falls under this category of social business.

The poor could get the shares of these companies as gifts by donors, or they could buy the shares with their own money. The borrowers with their own money buy Grameen Bank shares, which cannot be transferred to non-borrowers. A committed professional team does the day-to-day running of the bank.

Bilateral and multi-lateral donors could easily create this type of social business. When a donor gives a loan or a grant to build a bridge in the recipient country, it could create a "bridge company" owned by the local poor. A committed management company could be given the responsibility of running the company. Profit of the company will go to the local poor as dividend, and towards building more bridges. Many infrastructure projects, like roads, highways, airports, seaports, utility companies could all be built in this manner.

Grameen has created two social businesses of the first type. One is a yogurt factory, to produce fortified yogurt to bring nutrition to malnourished children, in a joint venture with Danone. It will continue to expand until all malnourished children of Bangladesh are reached with this yogurt. Another is a chain of eye-care hospitals. Each hospital will undertake 10,000 cataract surgeries per year at differentiated prices to the rich and the poor.

Social Stock Market

To connect investors with social businesses, we need to create social stock market where only the shares of social businesses will be traded. An investor will come to this stock-exchange with a clear intention of finding a social business, which has a mission of his liking. Anyone who wants to make money will go to the existing stock-market.

To enable a social stock-exchange to perform properly, we will need to create rating agencies, standardization of terminology, definitions, impact measurement tools, reporting formats, and new financial publications, such as, The Social Wall Street Journal. Business schools will offer courses and business management degrees on social businesses to train young managers how to manage social business enterprises in the most efficient manner, and, most of all, to inspire them to become social business entrepreneurs themselves.

Role of Social Businesses in Globalization

I support globalization and believe it can bring more benefits to the poor than its alternative. But it must be the right kind of globalization. To me, globalization is like a hundred-lane highway criss-crossing the world. If it is a free-for-all highway, its lanes will be taken over by the giant trucks from powerful economies. Bangladeshi rickshaw will be thrown off the highway. In order to have a win-win globalization we must have traffic rules, traffic police, and traffic authority for this global highway. Rule of "strongest takes it all" must be replaced by rules that ensure that the poorest have a place and piece of the action, without being elbowed out by the strong. Globalization must not become financial imperialism.

Powerful multi-national social businesses can be created to retain the benefit of globalization for the poor people and poor countries. Social businesses will either bring ownership to the poor people, or keep the profit within the poor countries, since taking dividends will not be their objective. Direct foreign investment by foreign social businesses will be exciting news for recipient countries. Building strong economies in the poor countries by protecting their national interest from plundering companies will be a major area of interest for the social businesses.

We Create What We Want

We get what we want, or what we don't refuse. We accept the fact that we will always have poor people around us, and that poverty is part of human destiny. This is precisely why we continue to have poor people around us. If we firmly believe that poverty is unacceptable to us, and that it should not belong to a civilized society, we would have built appropriate institutions and policies to create a poverty-free world.

We wanted to go to the moon, so we went there. We achieve what we want to achieve. If we are not achieving something, it is because we have not put our minds to it. We create what we want.

What we want and how we get to it depends on our mindsets. It is extremely difficult to change mindsets once they are formed. We create the world in accordance with our mindset. We need to invent ways to change our perspective continually and reconfigure our mindset quickly as new knowledge emerges. We can reconfigure our world if we can reconfigure our mindset.

We Can Put Poverty in the Museums

I believe that we can create a poverty-free world because poverty is not created by poor people. It has been created and sustained by the economic and social system that we have designed for ourselves; the institutions and concepts that make up that system; the policies that we pursue.

Poverty is created because we built our theoretical framework on assumptions which under-estimates human capacity, by designing concepts, which are too narrow (such as concept of business, credit- worthiness, entrepreneurship, employment) or developing institutions, which remain half-done (such as financial institutions, where poor are left out). Poverty is caused by the failure at the conceptual level, rather than any lack of capability on the part of people.

I firmly believe that we can create a poverty-free world if we collectively believe in it. In a poverty-free world, the only place you would be able to see poverty is in the poverty museums. When school children take a tour of the poverty museums, they would be horrified to see the misery and indignity that some human beings had to go through. They would blame their forefathers for tolerating this inhuman condition, which existed for so long, for so many people.

A human being is born into this world fully equipped not only to take care of him or herself, but also to contribute to enlarging the well being of the world as a whole. Some get the chance to explore their potential to some degree, but many others never get any opportunity, during their lifetime, to unwrap the wonderful gift they were born with. They die unexplored and the world remains deprived of their creativity, and their contribution.

Grameen has given me an unshakeable faith in the creativity of human beings. This has led me to believe that human beings are not born to suffer the misery of hunger and poverty.

To me poor people are like bonsai trees. When you plant the best seed of the tallest tree in a flower-pot, you get a replica of the tallest tree, only inches tall. There is nothing wrong with the seed you planted, only the soil-base that is too inadequate. Poor people are bonsai people. There is nothing wrong in their seeds. Simply, society never gave them the base to grow on. All it needs to get the poor people out of poverty for us to create an enabling environment for them. Once the poor can unleash their energy and creativity, poverty will disappear very quickly.

Let us join hands to give every human being a fair chance to unleash their energy and creativity.

Let me conclude by expressing my deep gratitude to the Norwegian Nobel Committee for recognizing that poor people, and especially poor women, have both the potential and the right to live a decent life, and that microcredit helps to unleash that potential.

I believe this honor that you give us will inspire many more bold initiatives around the world to make a historical breakthrough in ending global poverty.

Read About Michael Savages' history of hate talk radio - just Google "Michael Savage Hate Talk Radio" - an see the footprints in the muck. He is smart, funny at times BUT this does not compensate for his violation of human rights. I picked up info on him when researching Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan. I've got my list and I am checking it twice, I'm calling KSFO HateTalk Advertisers with the following advice: Google: "KSFO Hate Talk Radio"

WHO wants to advertise on Hate Talk Radio? Without exception, every advertiser I have called has said, Oh, My!, Good Grief, I Had No Idea! Thank You. Etc. One on my list is Ford. Next day I hear Lee Rodgers bad mouthing Ford, and I do not hear Ford advertising any more. Hmmmm.

My blogs are only a part. Maybe pivotal at this juncture. Gracias Spocko, ACLU, Electronic Frontiers Foundation, Bloggers,Media Matters. New York Times. etc. for your part. Calling the Advertisers is working.

So, How did I become involved? About a month ago I turned on my radio. My radio is often parked on KSFO because I listen to a late night show, Coast to Coast Am. My famous bro, Art Bell, started Coast To Coast, and now hosts weekends. (He is Trey to me. When he was 12, his pinball machine shocked him and threw him across the room. I heard the thud on our shared wall. I asked, " Trey, are you OK?"

Back to KSFO: I could not believe what I heard. I Googled "KSFO Hate Talk Radio", and Whammo! 13 years of KSFO Hate Talk Radio, 39,000+ Links..

Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan alternately plead and scream Free Speech. Not. It is Hate Speech, Inciting to Riot. What amazes me is that Lee and Melanie have not been fired! What they do is far worse than Imus.

Here is my guess: It was the withdrawal of advertisers that tumbled IMUS.

There is no room for Hate Talk anywhere on this planet. Dialogue Not Diatribe. Love and Respect. Not Hate.

Offer all Hate Talk Radio Hosts, including Michael Savage, rehab with the Center for Nonviolent Communication and Vision Force. I have suggested in other blogs that they sit down with Oprah, the above mentioned, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Art Bell, and myself. I have asked my brother Art Bell to switch stations, if KSFO will not fire Lee and Melanie. I asked him if he wants to be part of a Hate Talk Radio station. My brother's style does not include Hate Talk. Art Bell is fair, reasonable, informed, intelligent, insightful, honest, funny, positive. Bro, leave. Whether of not your boss Premiere likes it or not.

INCITING TO RIOT

13 YEARS OF HATE AND VIOLENCE

San Francisco's KSFO Hate Radio is still in full effect, with the Morning Show's hosts Melanie Morgan and Lee Rodgers. Rodgers and Lee are trying to hide behind the issue of Free Speech. It is not an issue of Free Speech; It is Hate Speech; Worse yet, it is Hate Speech Inciting to Riot In the recent KSFO Lee and Melanie Crosshairs of Hate: Mexican Illegal Immigrants, Physically Disabled, Homosexuals, the ACLU, Nancy Pelosi, Rosie O'Donnell, Cindy Sheehan, John Edwards. People need to keep watch outside KSFO every day until Melanie and Lee either stop the hate, are cured,or fired. Read my other Blogs for examples of inciting to riot, for the13 year summary of KSFO Hate Radio

One of the newer KSFO advertisers is Trader Joe's. I am guessing Trader Joe's does not have a clue about the content of the Morning 5-9 AM program. I contacted Trader Joe's, as I did Purina. Purina has Melanie as one of their Ambassadors. I am not hearing Trader Joe's ads any more. I need to call Purina, since they have only sent me an impersonal email reply. It has as a Response number - but for all I know, it could refer to the flavor of kibbels. There are 15 other calls I need to make. Other advertisers in the dark about Hate Radio. Could they sue KSFO for improper disclosure?

What is the relationship of KSFO Management to Lee and Melanie? Does Management condone and/or require hate to boost the ratings? If the owners and managers of KSFO have been around all these years, is Hate Talk actually their responsibility? It took the ACLU to get former KSFO host Savage fired. How can the Bay Area tolerate this???? It is time that the targeted communities pay a call to the KSFO station - a legal, peaceful political protest until this stops. Lee and Melanie have recently viciously attacked homosexuals, illegal immigrants, physically disabled, Nancy Pelosi, Rosie O'Donnell, Cindy Sheehan. Some of it so extreme and hateful, it is inciting to riot, specifically,remarks made about Rosie O'Donnell, and reference to an NRA story. These two alone are absolute reasons to fire Morgan and Rodgers.

TAKE IT HIGHER! My suggestion to Oprah Winfrey is that she have Melanie and Lee on her show, along with Marshall Rosenberg of The Center for Nonviolent Communication, and Michael Skye of Vision Force. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, Imus as well. Lee and Melanie are not the only ones who need help with their Us/Them, Good/Bad, We Are Normal/You Are Not, Name Calling, Racist, Homophobic Ways.

NEEDED: Dialogue Instead of Diatribe. Mutual Respect. Mutual Problem Solving, Support/Not Support the Troops, Troops who Doubt/ Troops Who Do Not Doubt. Global Peace, Global Healing, Global Transformation. Respect. Compassion, Love, Unconditional Love, Forgiveness.

I have been going through the San Francisco Chronicle archives, and I'm not even one quarter through. This will be very brief as the protests against KSFO Hate Speech Radio are so many:

A Message from the National Chairman of the Democratic National
Committee....

In the aftermath of the Oklahoma tragedy, Americans are asking how
our society became so violent, how we can build more peaceful
communities, and how such a horrifying act could have been
committed against so many innocent people.

I am writing to you because there are organized efforts in this country that spread hatred and encourage violence in our
communities. These purveyors of hate are working nonstop to
intimidate law enforcement efforts and create a climate of
lawlessness.

In San Francisco, radio listeners on KSFO recently heard talk show hosts speak of "lynching a few liberals" and encouraging listeners to "shoot illegal immigrants who come across the border." (Minneapolis Star-Tribune, 2/24/95)

These are just a few examples of some of the venom spewed on the airwaves. Other organized groups also are spreading hatred and encouraging violence.

This sort of violent speech should be repugnant to all Americans. And there is clearly a connection between such hateful diatribes and the escalation of violence that our country has experienced.

It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to work to end this uncivil discourse before more innocent lives are lost. Today I am writing to urge everyone to speak out against those who threaten the civility of our society. Our voices are stronger than theirs if we make them heard. I encourage you to:

send letters to your local newspapers calling for an end to these efforts to incite violence;
call your local radio stations and tell them that you
want the purveyors of hate to be held accountable for their
remarks;

call or write to your elected officials and tell them you
want them to work toward ending these efforts to destroy our
communities; and,

organize local efforts in your communities to protest against the irresponsible media outlets that put this garbage on the air.
Many people are profiting by distributing these hateful attacks. Media organizations make money this way, talk show hosts get rich, and the NRA's bank account increases when more people buy guns to wage war on the government. All of them have an incentive to continue to fan the flames of hatred. And we have an incentive -- the protection of our families -- to stop them.

Together we can work to ensure that our society adheres to rational and civil discourse. We have no choice but to act now to ensure that we remain a peaceful and law abiding society.

J. Paul Emerson, the controversial KSFO talk show host whose inflammatory remarks about gays and minorities sparked protests, pickets and an advertising boycott of his show, was sacked by the station yesterday.
Officials at both KSFO (560 AM) and its corporate parent, Capital Cities/ABC, confirmed that Emerson had been taken off the air, but refused further comment.

Responding to KSFO's AIDS-phobic and homophobic broadcasts, over a hundred protesters—including S. F. Supervisors Tom Ammiano, Carole Migden and Sue Bierman—picketed the offices of the Bay Area radio station.

The February 3rd demonstration was spearheaded by ACT UP/Golden Gate, GLAAD, Mobilization Against AIDS, The AIDS Policy Project, and Project Inform. KSFO is one of several Bay Area broadcasting ventures owned by media giant ABC (the American Broadcasting Company).

Exercising his own right of response, S. F. Mayor Frank Jordan wrote a letter to KSFO's general manager in which he described Emerson's HIV broadcasts as "absolutely false" and a threat to "the public health and safety of our citizens."

El Cerrito police, city officials and community leaders have strongly denounced a police officer who allegedly made derogatory comments about liberals, gays, feminists, homeless people and the Holocaust while moonlighting as a radio talk show host.
The controversy, which erupted this week when the El Cerrito Police Officers' Association issued a letter condemning the ``offensive'' remarks, raises questions about how far off-duty civil servants can go while exercising their right to freedom of speech.
El Cerrito Police officer Michael Spearman allegedly advocated lynching liberals, joked about gays ``looking at my butt'' and said the Holocaust was given ``too much attention'' while working recently as a fill-in talk show host on KSFO-AM radio. The officer's comments outraged several members of the police department, who claimed Spearman was, in effect, casting the entire force as bigots who care little about the plight of disadvantaged people.

An angry group of state lawmakers is telling several San Francisco radio talk show hosts to ``put up or shut up'' over their continual claims that the state's new smog check program is a sinister plot to confiscate people's cars.

``After listening to these shows, people are writing and calling us, convinced that the government's black helicopters are going to land in their yards and take away their old Chevrolet,'' said Ed Matovcik, chief aide to Senator Mike Thompson, who is one of the five lawmakers challenging the radio hosts. ``They believe it because they heard it on the radio.''

Thompson, D-St. Helena, and the four other legislators decided they would rebut the radio assertions, one by one, at a Monday morning news conference at the state Capitol.

For example, they plan to point out that it is unconstitutional for the state to confiscate cars for failing a smog test.

KSFO Listener Threatens to Kill CA Senator and Family

Things reached the breaking point this week when a drunken caller left five messages on Thompson's office answering machine threatening to kill him, his wife and his mother.

The caller, who left his name, was interrogated by police and apologized, saying he had become angry after listening to a KSFO talk program. Thompson later asked authorities not to press charges.

Asian American Coalition vs KSFO

In Sacramento, an organization of Asian-American groups organized a protest against hate speech on the public airwaves including KSFO-AM's nationally syndicated Michael Savage.

Calling the Chinese "little devils," Savage called for dropping nuclear weapons on the country and said that Chinese-Americans should be put in internment camps if they wouldn't sign loyalty oaths.
"It goes far beyond ridiculing a certain ethnic group or calling names or making a certain group the brunt of jokes," says Georgette Imura, part of a Sacramento group called CAPITAL (the Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership). Rather than asking help from the FCC, they sent letters to KSFO advertisers and picketed the Sacramento station, KSTE, which airs the show. "We don't want to get into free-speech issues. Instead, we are going to hit them in the pocketbook."
"What it (hate speech) does is send a message to misguided folks that it's OK to act and talk that way. Our fear is that this will lead to acts of violence or discrimination."

{News Update: Congratulations to the owners of SavageStupidity.com for their legal triumph over Michael Savage and his attempt to bully them off the web. It was announced today (June 30, 2003) that their website is legal and protected under the first amendment.

Ross, CA.-- An apology from Bay Area talk show host Michael Savage, scheduled to be given to the students of a Marin County high school, was derailed Friday December 10 when an alleged misunderstanding about the age and number of the meetings' attendees caused the talk show host to duck out on the meeting at the last minute.

Savage intimated in a broadcast on Disney-owned KSFO-FM, that the possibility of forcible rape was a reason why female high school students might find it exciting to feed homeless people in San Francisco's inner city.
An apology for Savage's sexually improper comments was negotiated during a meeting October 5 between (then) Branson teacher and parent Dartanyan Brown, KSFO President Micheal Luckoff and Operations Manager Jack Swanson. According to Brown, the meeting held at the Front street offices of ABC-TV in San Francisco, was a cordial one with Luckoff offering his personal apology to Brown for any problems caused by Savage's comments.

A letter of protest, signed by teachers at the school, was sent to the radio station in early October. The letter was responded to by Jack Swanson, operations manager at KSFO who, after reviewing the tape, agreed with the teacher that "indeed, Mr. Savage's comments were well over the line of acceptability."

My local right wing talk radio station, KSFO, had Brian Sussman on last night around 6:20. He was talking about his views on torture and what torture he would like to perform. "I would hold a 9mm to his head and cock it. Then I would tell him that I was going to cut off a finger and then his penis." I had to turn off the station after that. It was just straight up sadism and cruelty described in graphic detail. From a man who calls himself a "theocon", and at a time when young children could easily be listening.

We have our first documented success.

Update: MEDC responds quickly

After I read last week that the Michigan Economic Development Corporation had advertised on KSFO, I sent emails to James Epolito, MEDC President and CEO, and Lisa Dancsok, MEDC VP for Marketing, Communications and Legislative Affairs, to inform them of the situation. I received a personal response via email that evening from Ms. Dancsok, informing me that they were investigating the situation immediately.

Yesterday, I received a phone call from Jim Epolito himself. He'd already met with with Governor Granholm about the situation, and needless to say she was horrified that money had been spent on advertising on that station.

The ads ran in October and November, and apparently MEDC's ad agency, who bought the spots, was not aware of the programming content. I bet they thought they were getting the Little Mermaid, not advocates for violence, torture, and hate.

At any rate, the MEDC has already canceled any future ad buys on the station, so KSFO now has one less advertiser.

When was the last time their license was renewed? I haven't read all the comments in Mike Stark's diaries, so I don't know if this was brought up or not. But don't radio stations have their licenses reviewed and renewed by the FCC every few years? I know it is highly unusual for the FCC to deny a license but, God, in this case...

On the other hand, I can just imagine the hue and cry from the wingnutosphere if one of their vehicles of hate were forced off the air. So tis probably not a good idea....

13 YEARS OF HATE AND VIOLENCE

San Francisco's KSFO Hate Radio is still in full effect, with the Morning Show's hosts Melanie Morgan and Lee Rodgers. Rodgers and Lee are trying to hide behind the issue of Free Speech. It is not an issue of Free Speech; It is Hate Speech; Worse yet, it is Hate Speech Inciting to Riot In the recent KSFO Lee and Melanie crosshairs of hate: Mexican Illegal Immigrants, Physically Disabled, Homosexuals, the ACLU, Nancy Pelosi, Rosie O'Donnell, Cindy Sheehan, John Edwards. People need to keep watch outside KSFO every day until Melanie and Lee either stop the hate, are cured,or fired. Read my other Blogs for examples of inciting to riot, for the 13 year summary of KSFO Hate Radio

One of the newer KSFO advertisers was Trader Joe's. I am guessing Trader Joe's do not have a clue about the content of the Morning 5-9 AM program. I contacted Trader Joe's, as I did Purina. Purina has Melanie as one of their Ambassadors. I am not hearing Trader Joe's ads any more. I need to call Purina, since they have only sent me an impersonal email reply. It has as a Response number - but for all I know, it could refer to the flavor of kibbels. There are 15 other calls I need to make. Other advertisers in the dark about Hate Radio. Could they sue KSFO for improper disclosure?

What is the relationship of KSFO Management to Lee and Melanie? Does Management condone and/or require hate to boost the ratings? If the owners and managers of KSFO have been around all these years, is Hate Talk actually their responsibility? It took the ACLU to get former KSFO host Savage fired. How can the Bay Area tolerate this???? It is time that the targeted communities pay a call to the KSFO station - a legal, peaceful political protest until this stops. Lee and Melanie have recently viciously attacked homosexuals, illegal immigrants, physically disabled, Nancy Pelosi, Rosie O'Donnell, Cindy Sheehan. Some of it so extreme and hateful, it is inciting to riot, specifically,remarks made about Rosie O'Donnell, and reference to an NRA story. These two alone are absolute reasons to fire Morgan and Rodgers.

TAKE IT HIGHER! My suggestion to Oprah Winfrey is that she have Melanie and Lee on her show, along with Marshall Rosenberg of The Center for Nonviolent Communication, and Michael Skye of Vision Force. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, Imus as well. Lee and Melanie are not the only ones who need help with their Us/Them, Good/Bad, We Are Normal/You Are Not, Name Calling, Racist, Homophobic Ways.

NEEDED: Dialogue Instead of Diatribe. Mutual Respect. Mutual Problem Solving, Support/Not Support the Troops, Troops who Doubt/ Troops Who Do Not Doubt. Global Peace, Global Healing, Global Transformation. Respect. Compassion, Love, Unconditional Love, Forgiveness.

I have been going through the San Francisco Chronicle archives, and I'm not even one quarter through. This will be very brief as the protests against KSFO Hate Speech Radio are so many:

A Message from the National Chairman of the Democratic National
Committee....

In the aftermath of the Oklahoma tragedy, Americans are asking how
our society became so violent, how we can build more peaceful
communities, and how such a horrifying act could have been
committed against so many innocent people.

I am writing to you because there are organized efforts in this country that spread hatred and encourage violence in our
communities. These purveyors of hate are working nonstop to
intimidate law enforcement efforts and create a climate of
lawlessness.

In San Francisco, radio listeners on KSFO recently heard talk show hosts speak of "lynching a few liberals" and encouraging listeners to "shoot illegal immigrants who come across the border." (Minneapolis Star-Tribune, 2/24/95)

These are just a few examples of some of the venom spewed on the airwaves. Other organized groups also are spreading hatred and encouraging violence.

This sort of violent speech should be repugnant to all Americans. And there is clearly a connection between such hateful diatribes and the escalation of violence that our country has experienced.

It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to work to end this uncivil discourse before more innocent lives are lost. Today I am writing to urge everyone to speak out against those who threaten the civility of our society. Our voices are stronger than theirs if we make them heard. I encourage you to:

send letters to your local newspapers calling for an end to these efforts to incite violence;
call your local radio stations and tell them that you
want the purveyors of hate to be held accountable for their

call or write to your elected officials and tell them you
want them to work toward ending these efforts to destroy our
communities; and,

organize local efforts in your communities to protest against the irresponsible media outlets that put this garbage on the air.
Many people are profiting by distributing these hateful attacks. Media organizations make money this way, talk show hosts get rich, and the NRA's bank account increases when more people buy guns to wage war on the government. All of them have an incentive to continue to fan the flames of hatred. And we have an incentive -- the protection of our families -- to stop them.

Together we can work to ensure that our society adheres to rational and civil discourse. We have no choice but to act now to ensure that we remain a peaceful and law abiding society.

J. Paul Emerson, the controversial KSFO talk show host whose inflammatory remarks about gays and minorities sparked protests, pickets and an advertising boycott of his show, was sacked by the station yesterday.
Officials at both KSFO (560 AM) and its corporate parent, Capital Cities/ABC, confirmed that Emerson had been taken off the air, but refused further comment.

The February 3rd demonstration was spearheaded by ACT UP/Golden Gate, GLAAD, Mobilization Against AIDS, The AIDS Policy Project, and Project Inform. KSFO is one of several Bay Area broadcasting ventures owned by media giant ABC (the American Broadcasting Company).

Exercising his own right of response, S. F. Mayor Frank Jordan wrote a letter to KSFO’s general manager in which he described Emerson’s HIV broadcasts as "absolutely false" and a threat to "the public health and safety of our citizens."

The controversy, which erupted this week when the El Cerrito Police Officers' Association issued a letter condemning the ``offensive'' remarks, raises questions about how far off-duty civil servants can go while exercising their right to freedom of speech.
El Cerrito Police officer Michael Spearman allegedly advocated lynching liberals, joked about gays ``looking at my butt'' and said the Holocaust was given ``too much attention'' while working recently as a fill-in talk show host on KSFO-AM radio. The officer's comments outraged several members of the police department, who claimed Spearman was, in effect, casting the entire force as bigots who care little about the plight of disadvantaged people.

An angry group of state lawmakers is telling several San Francisco radio talk show hosts to ``put up or shut up'' over their continual claims that the state's new smog check program is a sinister plot to confiscate people's cars.

``After listening to these shows, people are writing and calling us, convinced that the government's black helicopters are going to land in their yards and take away their old Chevrolet,'' said Ed Matovcik, chief aide to Senator Mike Thompson, who is one of the five lawmakers challenging the radio hosts. ``They believe it because they heard it on the radio.''

Thompson, D-St. Helena, and the four other legislators decided they would rebut the radio assertions, one by one, at a Monday morning news conference at the state Capitol.

For example, they plan to point out that it is unconstitutional for the state to confiscate cars for failing a smog test.

Things reached the breaking point this week when a drunken caller left five messages on Thompson's office answering machine threatening to kill him, his wife and his mother.

The caller, who left his name, was interrogated by police and apologized, saying he had become angry after listening to a KSFO talk program. Thompson later asked authorities not to press charges.

In Sacramento, an organization of Asian-American groups organized a protest against hate speech on the public airwaves including KSFO-AM's nationally syndicated Michael Savage.

Calling the Chinese "little devils," Savage called for dropping nuclear weapons on the country and said that Chinese-Americans should be put in internment camps if they wouldn't sign loyalty oaths.
"It goes far beyond ridiculing a certain ethnic group or calling names or making a certain group the brunt of jokes," says Georgette Imura, part of a Sacramento group called CAPITAL (the Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership). Rather than asking help from the FCC, they sent letters to KSFO advertisers and picketed the Sacramento station, KSTE, which airs the show. "We don't want to get into free-speech issues. Instead, we are going to hit them in the pocketbook."
"What it (hate speech) does is send a message to misguided folks that it's OK to act and talk that way. Our fear is that this will lead to acts of violence or discrimination."

{News Update: Congratulations to the owners of SavageStupidity.com for their legal triumph over Michael Savage and his attempt to bully them off the web. It was announced today (June 30, 2003) that their website is legal and protected under the first amendment.

Ross, CA.-- An apology from Bay Area talk show host Michael Savage, scheduled to be given to the students of a Marin County high school, was derailed Friday December 10 when an alleged misunderstanding about the age and number of the meetings' attendees caused the talk show host to duck out on the meeting at the last minute.

Savage intimated in a broadcast on Disney-owned KSFO-FM, that the possibility of forcible rape was a reason why female high school students might find it exciting to feed homeless people in San Francisco's inner city.
An apology for Savage's sexually improper comments was negotiated during a meeting October 5 between (then) Branson teacher and parent Dartanyan Brown, KSFO President Micheal Luckoff and Operations Manager Jack Swanson. According to Brown, the meeting held at the Front street offices of ABC-TV in San Francisco, was a cordial one with Luckoff offering his personal apology to Brown for any problems caused by Savage's comments.

A letter of protest, signed by teachers at the school, was sent to the radio station in early October. The letter was responded to by Jack Swanson, operations manager at KSFO who, after reviewing the tape, agreed with the teacher that "indeed, Mr. Savage's comments were well over the line of acceptability."

My local right wing talk radio station, KSFO, had Brian Sussman on last night around 6:20. He was talking about his views on torture and what torture he would like to perform. "I would hold a 9mm to his head and cock it. Then I would tell him that I was going to cut off a finger and then his penis." I had to turn off the station after that. It was just straight up sadism and cruelty described in graphic detail. From a man who calls himself a "theocon", and at a time when young children could easily be listening.

We have our first documented success.

Update: MEDC responds quickly

After I read last week that the Michigan Economic Development Corporation had advertised on KSFO, I sent emails to James Epolito, MEDC President and CEO, and Lisa Dancsok, MEDC VP for Marketing, Communications and Legislative Affairs, to inform them of the situation. I received a personal response via email that evening from Ms. Dancsok, informing me that they were investigating the situation immediately.

Yesterday, I received a phone call from Jim Epolito himself. He'd already met with with Governor Granholm about the situation, and needless to say she was horrified that money had been spent on advertising on that station.

The ads ran in October and November, and apparently MEDC's ad agency, who bought the spots, was not aware of the programming content. I bet they thought they were getting the Little Mermaid, not advocates for violence, torture, and hate.

At any rate, the MEDC has already canceled any future ad buys on the station, so KSFO now has one less advertiser.

When was the last time their license was renewed? I haven't read all the comments in Mike Stark's diaries, so I don't know if this was brought up or not. But don't radio stations have their licenses reviewed and renewed by the FCC every few years? I know it is highly unusual for the FCC to deny a license but, God, in this case...

On the other hand, I can just imagine the hue and cry from the wingnutosphere if one of their vehicles of hate were forced off the air. So tis probably not a good idea....

EFF warned ABC not to pursue its bogus copyright infringement claims against 'Spocko' -- a blogger who sparked nationwide debate over a San Francisco radio station -- and asked the media giant to retract its baseless threats.

The free speech battle began when Spocko posted audio clips of what he deemed to be offensive talk-radio rhetoric from ABC-owned and San Francisco-based KSFO-AM on his blog at www.spockosbrain.com. In response, ABC, Inc. sent a threatening letter to the blogger's hosting company, claiming that copyright law prevented Spocko from posting the clips. The hosting company responded by shutting Spocko's website down, forcing him to move to a different provider. In a letter sent to ABC, Inc. Thursday, EFF warned that further false copyright claims could compel Spocko to take action to protect his free speech rights.

"Copyright law is not designed to silence speech that you dislike," said EFF Staff Attorney Matt Zimmerman. "ABC and KSFO know that their legal threats were absolutely groundless. Their time and efforts are better spent explaining why they think Spocko is wrong, and letting the public decide, instead of resorting to thuggish legal tactics."

Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love.
The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly. To start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a gaping hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner. His tail has long age been lost, leaving only the smallest stub, which he would constantly jerk and twitch.
Ugly would have been a dark grey tabby, striped-type, except for the sores covering his head, neck, even his shoulders with thick, yellowing scabs. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction. "That's one UGLY cat!!"
All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down, squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his lanky body around feet in forgiveness.
Whenever he spied children, he would come running, meowing frantically and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If you ever picked him, up he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor's huskies. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was apparent Ugly's sad life was almost at an end.
Ugly lay in a wet circle, his back legs and lower back twisted grossly out of shape, a gaping tear in the white strip of fur that ran down his front. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear him wheezing and gasping, and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting him terribly, I thought.
Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear. Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to suckle my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me, and I could hear the distinct sound of purring. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battled-scarred cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion.
At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me, or struggle in any way. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray could so alter my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly. Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. He had been scarred on the outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it was time for me to move on and learn to love truly and deeply. To give my total to those I cared for.
Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me, I will always try to be Ugly.

How is it possible for a Radio Station run by Walt Disney and ABC to have had Hate Talk Radio for 10 years!!!?? Is it the hour? 5-9 AM? I tuned in this week to hear "Lipstick Lesbian" and an extended ridicule of a prominant public figure because he has a speech impediment. Lee and Melanie,
Your name calling and labeling has a limited and harmful effect. There is the possibility of a show you could do with lots more juice. It would mean, though, that every time you name call or label human beings or their actions,you would need to hear from those you judge - Then there would be a dialogue, rather than diatribe; there would be the possibility for understanding, healing.
I am talking about the stuff of Win -Win, Conflict Resolution, Nonviolent Communication.
For example: When you attack those who cross cross the border illegally, you would need to invite at least
several of those who cross the border illegally to tell you why, AND you would need to interview the
organizations that represent these people.I have spent five years in Brazil and Mexico, and have seen the
extensive extreme poverty that would drive anyone to cross the border. Poverty so severe that there
is not enough food, there is really no shelter (shacks, cardboard homes for miles and miles, a few feet from the highway, etc.

I saw some great TV coverage of this - a man here in the US who was a racist and blamed the people of Mexico for coming illegally across the border UNTIL he visited their home and saw the conditions I describe here.
So, are we (USA) supposed to allow anyone from any country who is poor to cross the border? No.What can
we do now until we fix world poverty? What is incredible is how many people and organizations in the world are doing just that; Every day they are doing something to fix world povery and suffering. Humbling. Inspiring. Incredible.
Take a trip and see this kind of suffering. Then, you will focus on how to fix it. A spiritual teacher shared that if we
were really "awake" we would cry when we encountered the suffering of others. Maybe that is why we close down..
or we would be crying 24/7!. Somehow, we keep from seeing the suffering.

Let's spend our energy finding solutions for world poverty. We ARE all related.That is the higher
truth. Energy spent in name calling and racism is devisive and harmful.We are all related and
responsible for each other. One World One People vs. US vs Terrorists. So how do we shift
the consciousness of those who are a part of this reality? We start dialogues, meetings,

You both are more suited to such an exchange,rather than the formula name-calling
that you do. It is your paycheck, but it does not satisfy your heart or spirit.What I find interesting
is that your words are harmful - your energy is quite positive - the result is that you spew crap, but it does not engender the response it would if your words and the energy behind the words matched.

"They're whispering that you are American!" my translator alerted me, just as a gentleman in the audience leapt to his feet. Facing me squarely, he hollered at the top of his lungs, "Murderer!" Fortunately, I was able to focus my attention on what the man was feeling and needing. In this case, I had some cues. On the way into the refugee camp, I had seen several empty tear gas canisters that had been shot into the camp the night before. Clearly marked on each canister were the words "Made in U.S.A." I knew that the refugees harbored a lot of anger toward the U.S. for supplying tear gas and other weapons to Israel.
I addressed the man who had called me a murderer:

So you're furious and would appreciate some support in improving your living conditions and gaining political independence?
He:
Do you know what it's like to live here for twenty-seven years the way I have with my family—children and all? Have you got the faintest idea what that's been like for us?
I:
Sounds like you're feeling very desperate and you're wondering whether I or anybody else can really understand what it's like to be living under these conditions.
He:
You want to understand? Tell me, do you have children? Do they go to school? Do they have playgrounds? My son is sick! He plays in open sewage! His classroom has no books! Have you seen a school that has no books?
I:
I hear how painful it is for you to raise your children here; you'd like me to know that what you want is what all parents want for their children—a good education, opportunity to play and grow in a healthy environment . . .
He:
That's right, the basics! Human rights—isn't that what you Americans call it? Why don't more of you come here and see what kind of human rights you're bringing here!
I:
You'd like more Americans to be aware of the enormity of the suffering here and to look more deeply at the consequences of our political actions?..>..>..>..>..>..>..>..>
Our dialogue continued, with him expressing his pain for nearly twenty more minutes, and I listening for the feeling and need behind each statement. I didn't agree or disagree. I received his words, not as attacks, but as gifts from a fellow human willing to share his soul and deep vulnerabilities with me.
Once the gentleman felt understood, he was able to hear me as I explained my purpose for being at the camp. An hour later, the same man who had called me a murderer was inviting me to his home for a Ramadan dinner.

Believing that it is our nature to enjoy giving and receiving in a compassionate manner, I have been preoccupied most of my life with two questions. What happens to disconnect us from our compassionate nature, leading us to behave violently and exploitatively? And conversely, what allows some people to stay connected to their compassionate nature under even the most trying circumstances?
My preoccupation with these questions began in childhood, around the summer of 1943, when our family moved to Detroit, Michigan. The second week after we arrived, a race war erupted over an incident at a public park. More than forty people were killed in the next few days. Our neighborhood was situated in the center of the violence, and we spent three days locked in the house.
When the race riot ended and school began, I discovered that a name could be as dangerous as any skin color. When the teacher called my name during attendance, two boys glared at me and hissed, "Are you a kike?" I had never heard the word before and didn't know it was used by some people in a derogatory way to refer to Jews. After school, the two were waiting for me: they threw me to the ground, kicked and beat me.
Since that summer in 1943, I have been examining the two questions I mentioned. What empowers us, for example, to stay connected to our compassionate nature even under the worst circumstances? I am thinking of people like Etty Hillesum, who remained compassionate even while subjected to the grotesque conditions of a German concentration camp. As she wrote in her journal at the time,
"I am not easily frightened. Not because I am brave but because I know that I am dealing with human beings, and that I must try as hard as I can to understand everything that anyone ever does. And that was the real import of this morning: not that a disgruntled young Gestapo officer yelled at me, but that I felt no indignation, rather a real compassion, and would have liked to ask, 'Did you have a very unhappy childhood, has your girlfriend let you down?' Yes, he looked harassed and driven, sullen and weak. I should have liked to start treating him there and then, for I know that pitiful young men like that are dangerous as soon as they are let loose on mankind."—Etty Hillesum: A Memoir

The Virginia Tech tragedy is about 32 people murdered, the survivors, Cho the murderer, friends, families, acquaintances, and those all over the world who have responded with sorrow and compassion; extending to touch every sentient being on our earth. We all are connected on the web of life. The intensity of the Virginia Tech tragedy touched so many because of the magnitude of the violence, and the technology - tv, internet, radio, newspapers, which carries such disasters to all corners of the globe.

MURDER IS HAPPENING EVERY DAY ALL OVER THE WORLD. IF WORLD DAILY TOTALS WERE KEPT, WHAT IS THE WORLD TOTAL OF PEOPLE MURDERED EACH DAY? HOW MANY FAMILY ON FAMILY? HOW MANY STRANGER ON STRANGER? HOW MANY BY WAR? HOW MANY BY NATURAL OR MAN-MADE DISASTERS? HOW MANY IN THE USA? AFRICA? SWEDEN? RUSSIA? CHINA? INDIA? PHILLIPINES? BRAZIL?MEXICO?AMAZON JUNGLE? YOUR TOWN? WHAT IS THE DAILY TOTAL FOR THE US ALONE? WHAT CAN WE DO TO IMPACT THIS? WHERE IS THERE NO MURDER?

This tragedy includes Cho and his family and the widening circle. Find out about his life. Read about the lives of millions of families like Cho's - families in crushing poverty who leave their countries to work in the USA legally or illegally for a rags to rags or a rags to riches life - leaving behind other family members to languish. The struggle and loneliness of so many makes up the third largest world-wide group of people - immigrants - forced to leave their own lands to deal with the survival issues and racism of the new county. Tragedies of violence, racism, and abuse circle our earth.

So do people and stories that open and heal our hearts. This tragedy has a healing side. May we use it to in some way end the suffering of others and ourselves. To understand ultimately the need to forgive the abusers - to find the unconditional love and compassion that enables us to make a difference. An autopsy will reveal if drugs were involved -If neurological contributors will not show in an autopsy could it be a tumor? Cho was subject to ridicule by other students. If he had a diagnosis of, say schizophrenia, that could say so much about his isolation and hallucinations. Add to that isolation and ridicule to tip the precarious balance. We can live in isolated worlds in the US culture and in all cultures that have no center, no community, at least on a local level. It is possible to walk in a shadow - We need human contact and love to notice, to intervene, to heal. In Mexico and Brazil I saw incredible suffering from extreme, grinding poverty - street children, people in shacks inches from the roads, a few blocks behind the tourist attractions. What touched me so deeply was that like the very poor the world over, so many of these people were SO much happier than so most people I have seen in 40 years of travel in the United States. They were poor and laughed and enjoyed their lives. This is about the poor all over the world happy or not. Take away extreme poverty. I did not see happy poor people who were suffering at the level of malnutrition or mental- emotional illness.

This is about everyone being responsible for everyone - hearts touching hearts. 2007. This is about a comfortable life for all on the earth , a simple life and sharing, giving away, volunteering, tithing - celebrating the thousands and thousands of organizations and millions of people who care and help transform our Earth, our animals, plants, into paradise. All My Relations. All Our Relations.

What keeps each one of us from feeling compassion and unconditional love for every sentient being on our earth? People, Animals, Plants, the

Mountains? If we did, how long until all sentient beings were in Paradise?

How many of us are involved some way in making this possible?

ONE: Saint in Human Body - Why I Am Not Enlightened

Wanting to know why I am not Enlightened yet, I decided to ask Google: "Why Am I Not Enlightened?" So I typed that very question into the Google rectangle on my tool bar. Some great "answers" came up. Really great. (Ask and ye will receive.) I did it on a whim and because I knew it would be worthwhile. Humor factor too. Virtual 8 ball with phrases and sentences and articles and web pages. Out of this came the enlightenment that, just like the fact that we are Spirits in Bodies, we are Saints in bodies too. The God Within, the Higher Self (two "facts" not acknowledged in many forms of religion, and worse yet, causing those of unknowing, fear, judgment, or plain old evil intent, to foam at the mouth and try to destroy the message and messenger. Saints in bodies. Meaning we can love unconditionally, feel and display compassion, forgiveness, unity consciousness, help/heal others. (Christ, Buddha, Guadalupe, Great Spirit,Mohammed, etc.) So what stops us from accessing our Saintness? Karma and Will and ? I want to hear from others about the ? The ? may be nothing. Maybe it all rests with Karma and Will. What I like about being a Saint in a body means that there is something between me and my Saintness - or that in bodies we are flawed Saints until we are Saints in bodies. But Saints nevertheless. God Within, We are God. God Without. All true. How many millions of humans have been physically, emotionally, mentally damaged or destroyed for entertaining or practicing this? Ok, now I will meditate on this matter, share my answer, and someone else, including me,will Google that answer that will throw them over the top of the fence into Enlightenment Land. Divine within. Divine above. I am Divine. You are Divine. All My Relations.
